KUALA LUMPUR: The Government is absorbing all untrained temporary teachers into the school system as permanent teachers, said Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong.
“We have a shortage of substitute teachers and this move will help alleviate the problem,” he said.
“We have had situations where 11 teachers in one school got pregnant at the same time and there are not enough substitute teachers to cover for them.”
Both graduate and non-graduate untrained temporary teachers will undergo training during the school holidays before they are absorbed, he said at an MoU signing ceremony between Tunku Abdul Rahman College and IBM here.
In May, Education director-general Datuk Abd Ghafar Mahmud said that 6,000 out of the 13,000 untrained temporary teachers in service were ready to be absorbed as permanent teachers.
Asked about a group of 10 teachers who turned up at a magistrate’s court here on Monday to support another teacher who was being charged with molesting his students, Dr Wee said: “The ministry will be conducting a thorough investigation. So far, we found out that all 10 teachers were from the afternoon session.
“The court case was held in the morning, so it did not clash with classes and the teachers later returned to school to work.”
He added that no one could stop teachers from attending court hearings outside of their teaching hours.
On another matter, Dr Wee said the Education Ministry would be readjusting its school syllabus to compensate for the lack of males in institutions of higher learning.
“We know that many male students prefer hands-on oriented learning as opposed to study and exams-based learning,” he said.
The ministry, he said, wanted to transform the technical education and vocational training (TEVT) sector to make it attractive to students.
